Grant Shapps’ temporary ‘sale’ has at least put the focus back on rail.
Before the pandemic, our trains in Cornwall were getting steadily busier as people made the more climate-friendly choice to use them.
Branch lines like the half-hourly Truro-Falmouth one with the EU funded improvement works so trains could pass at Penryn were very well-used. The pandemic set us back a long way & trains need improving to recover. More affordable, investment in rolling stock, more branch lines, more frequent services.
The service is naturally moving back into public ownership as contracts expire. To have any chance of getting cars off our roads and carbon neutrality, we need to accelerate this, improve and invest. And let our trains take the strain again.
